Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of my most frequently asked questions. If you have additional questions you don't see below, feel free to call or email me any time.

Is this the same as a postpartum doula or night nurse?

Beyond Birth Newborn Support provides registered nurse–led newborn and postpartum support, which differs from traditional doula or newborn care services. All care is delivered by a Pennsylvania-licensed registered nurse with extensive neonatal and pediatric experience. Services are educational, supportive, and safety-focused, offering families evidence-based guidance and in-home newborn care.

Do you provide medical care or replace our pediatrician?

No. Beyond Birth Newborn Support does not replace your pediatrician, OB provider, or lactation consultant. Services are designed to complement your existing medical care. We provide education, observation, support, and guidance on when to seek medical attention, but we do not diagnose, prescribe, or provide medical treatment.

What kinds of families do you work with?

  • First-time parents

  • Experienced parents welcoming another baby

  • Families transitioning home after a NICU stay

  • Families seeking reassurance, education, or overnight support

All families are welcomed without judgment, regardless of feeding method or parenting style.

What happens during a virtual consultation?

Virtual consultations are conducted via secure video or phone call and are tailored to your specific concerns. Topics often include newborn care education, feeding guidance (within RN scope), sleep and soothing strategies, health observation support, and caregiver reassurance. Families are encouraged to ask questions and receive individualized guidance. If there is time left over, we will review all key pillars of newborn care to ensure families feel confident and informed.

What does in-home newborn care include?

In-home care focuses on safe newborn care, soothing, routine reinforcement, and caregiver support. Depending on your needs, this may include feeding support, education, observation, and hands-on assistance. Care is always provided within professional nursing scope and family preferences.

What happens during overnight newborn care?

Overnight care allows caregivers to rest while their baby is cared for safely in the home. Services may include infant feeding, soothing, and monitoring using safe sleep practices. A clear handoff is provided in the morning so caregivers feel informed and supported.

Do you help with breastfeeding or lactation?

Beyond Birth Newborn Support provides basic feeding support and education within registered nurse scope of practice. This includes positioning guidance, general troubleshooting, and recognizing when referral to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is appropriate. We are happy to collaborate with lactation professionals when needed.

How far in advance should we book?

Availability varies, especially for overnight care. Families are encouraged to book as early as possible during pregnancy when planning postpartum support. Last-minute availability may be limited but inquiries are always welcome.

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes. Gift cards are available and make a thoughtful, practical gift for expectant families.

Do you work with families bringing a baby home from the NICU?

Yes. Supporting families transitioning home after a NICU stay is a core focus of Beyond Birth Newborn Support. Care is provided by a registered nurse with extensive neonatal intensive care experience, allowing families to receive knowledgeable, compassionate support during this often emotional transition.

How is NICU transition support different from typical newborn care?

NICU graduates often come home with unique needs, routines, and caregiver concerns. Families may feel confident inside the hospital but overwhelmed once home without monitors, alarms, or immediate staff support. Beyond Birth Newborn Support helps bridge this gap by reinforcing education, supporting routines, and offering reassurance while families adjust to caring for their baby independently.

What if our baby has complex needs?

Beyond Birth Newborn Support accepts families with a wide range of newborn experiences. During an initial consultation, we will discuss your baby’s history and determine whether services are an appropriate fit or if referral to a higher level of medical or home health support is recommended.
